Interview with MYM|Nordahl

"I have never been to South-Korea"

Jesper „[pp]Nordahl[/pp]“ Henriksen is the guy behind MYM's WC3-Team. Because of his unfailing work ESL entitled him as "manager of the season" on WC3L-finals at the weekend. On Sunday evening we interviewed good-humoured Jesper in Hamburg. We spoke about his new award, the comparatively bad results of his team and the organisation of the event. Why wasn't your team able to win this tournament? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] The easiest answer is that the other guys played better than we did. I also think there are some issues. For example the ESWC Korea Qualification has come in the way, so one of the weeks we planned for practicing in Europe crashed with the ESWC Qualifier. And then the situation here with the Battles was problematic as well as the BattleNet Finals, the WC3L Finals and the World of Warcraft Finals were all set in the same schedule. It pushed the delays further. The matches finished too late and our players were tired. That influenced the quality of their game significantly. Usually Korean Players would have rebelled against playing under such circumstances. The routine was different and they didn't sleep as much as they would have needed it. So they didn't play as well as they could have. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] So you think the organisation of the tournament wasn't very good at all? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] Well, the Organisation itself was up to the usual standard, but in my opinion the idea to set three different Finals at the same time was not a good one. There are too many things going on and even if you are just playing one or two matches every day, you have to wait. For example, yesterday we waited an hour for the award ceremony and the match didn’t start till ten. I think even nine o clock is too late to start off. They want to show everything on TV. If we want to promote e-Sport as an ordinary sport and if we want to avoid the image of the esport player as the nerd, who sits all night in front of his computer, just eating fast foot, then we mustn't finish the matches off late in the night. So, the players are given the time to show themselves in public and eat somewhere else than Mc Donald's. Besides the players don't even want to play in the middle of the night. Show me another Sport, where the players play that late. At the WSVG in China they finished the games at eight o clock pm and then the players were free to leave the location. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] Any individual problems by one of your players in the tournament? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] We had got the Line-up we wanted, but maybe Lucifer underestimated the power of human. Even he said he played the perfect game, but he couldn't win anyway. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] What will happen with the team. Any changes for the next season? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] I'll give my standard answer, we will see. We are always looking for new additions to improve the teams but I don't have anything specific to announce. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] Could there be an option to take players from China? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] We started with Yellow to get a foot in the Chinese scene. There are a lot of Chinese talents. That might be interesting, but we will see. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] Do you speak with your players about Starcraft 2? What do they think about this game? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] I talked to Lucifer and he said, he wanted to wait and see, but if Warcraft survives, he will continue playing Warcraft. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] Do you expect Starcraft 2 will replace Warcraft 3? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] It is hard to say at this point. Starcraft 1 and Warcraft 3 are two very different games. Warcraft is very big on micro. Of course Micro is a big part in Starcraft as well but it didn't mean as much as it did in Warcaft. It will depend on how Starcraft 2 will be. If it will be more like Starcraft 1 or like Warcraft. Maybe there is a scene for both games, we will see. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] You are Manager of the Season. What does that distinction mean to you? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] Yesterday, when they announced my new title, they were speaking German before. I walked on the stage because I heard my name and thought they were just announcing the nominees. Actually I didn't know I have won until they sent me from the stage. So what I said on the stage yesterday didn't make much sense. I didn't really know what the exact criteria were. But it means a lot to me, because it is voted by the admins, who decide by what I do and how organised I am. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] How much time do you spend for the time every week? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] That varies a lot. I can spend from little as five hours to over 20 hours the week. I try to limit myself, because I have a full-time job. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] And how often have you been to South-Korea? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] I have never been to South-Korea. I only go to the league finals. I don't have an explicit need to travel. I just do my everyday job and do my job as a team manager and then I go to the finals. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] What do you think about the incident with Deadman? Is it responsible by clans to give him a new contract? [pp]Nordahl:[/pp] Taking him for every team would be a mistake. He will never join our team. And no other big team will take him. I am always for second chances and third chances and fourth chances. But first he cheats, then he makes a lot of other trouble like getting into a fight with ToD, now he hits ownitsch and insomnia. Somewhere we have to draw the line, like in cycling to ban the cheater, we have to ban this men as well. [cc]mymTw:[/cc] Thank you for the interview.
