Interview with Carmac
1on1 with Carmac (english version)
Deutsche Version - English version
"[...] so basically he cheated me the bastard, Griff..."
mTw.AMD: Hey Carmac, nice to meet you. Is this your first time in Cologne?
Carmac: No, of course not. I've been to cologne for about seven times, but these are my first EPS finals and I have to say that i am quite impressed that the final of one championship in one nation has an event like this.
mTw.AMD: How do you like the city in comparison to other german cities?
Carmac: To be very honest with you, I haven't seen much of other german cities. I've been to Leipzig three times and I've only seen the apartment we've slept in and the show - nothing else. The same in Hannover, I have seen almost nothing of hannover and I have been to berlin once, which was pretty nice I guess, but I havent been there long enough to make an opinion. Here in Cologne on its own, you can see that the city was "fast völlig zerstört" during the second world war. The Altstadt is very small, the cathedrals are obviously very beautiful, but it was so destroyed that it kind of lost a lot of its character. In the evening, when the lights and the people come out it has a very unique character and I have to say that I like the city very much.
mTw.AMD: So Carmac, what do you think makes you such a successful interviewer?
Carmac: I think the fact that people like my interviews. That would make me successful, because essentially the definition of success, when you provide people with some entertainment is, that they like it. So from that point of view you could say that I'm successful. I don't know, but it's maybe the fact that I'm trying to make it fun for the people to read and to watch. I try to bring out the real guy behind the nickname and the profi, so maybe that is part of my success. But it's really difficult for anyone to judge himself and, you know, I would prefer somebody else to judge me than myself, because obviously when you judge yourself you will always make a mistake.
mTw.AMD: What's the secret, how do you always manage to squeeze some funny answers out of the pros, what nobody else achieves?
Carmac: Well the thing with that is, I try to work very hard - usually try to work very hard. You know, I wake up in the morning, you might not see many articles from me, but I keep up to date with everything all the time. There are many people that I talk to every day just to know what's going on in esports, just to know who does what. And before I interview somebody, I always try to do my homework. For instance with the robban interview I went to see the other swedish SK players and asked them about stories. Abdi told me about the story with prague when robban just got drunk and got a train to prague from berlin and disappeared for a week. You know, if you have those stories, if you do your homework about a guy then I guess you are able to get some interesting answers. I think that's the key - doing your homework. And also sometimes the key is to... sometimes people will not want to give you any answers. You need to get them going, you need to introduce a nice atmosphere, you need to make them feel good about the interview and then they will start, you know, talking and they will start doing fun stuff. Of course, if you surprise people then you're going to get the best reaction - always. If you dig up a story that they thought nobody would know be sure you get a good reaction and that's what I'm trying to do.
mTw.AMD: Also the interview with whimp from mTw.AMD was very fun to watch. Now after you talked to him, if you had to describe whimp with just one word, what was it? And do not say "whimp"! (winks)
Carmac: Ehm, to describe whmip with just one word... eeehm (pause)... I would use the word "shy". He is definitely shy... and another word - very, very polite. So shy and polite are two words I would give whimp. He's such a great guy he deserves at least two words to describe him. (smiles) He's a really nice guy!
mTw.AMD: You know, Germany and Poland have very much in common these days. For example we both placed last at the Eurovision Songcontest. You think our nations suck in terms of music?
Carmac: (pause)... No. You know, if you watch my 1on1s on SK Gaming, the music is made by a German artist, his name is Christian Lincoln. He's a baseguitar player for the band "Panic" - very nice music I think. It's difficult for me because it's German, but I like the music. It's not my genre but I appreciate them a lot. So I wouldn't say they suck (smiles). Of course you do have some very bad music, like Sarah Connor, I think. You know, I could name a few but I would rather not because I might piss off some German people. Poland also has some bad, bad music - even worse than Sarah Connor! But we also have some very good music, so I don't know actually. It's difficult to say, if I were to judge Poland and Germany in terms of music then I would say that Great Britain and America are better countries in terms of music, but classic music, that's what Germany and Poland are very good at.
mTw.AMD: I have to admit that I don't know any Polish bands, so let's change topic. What's your tip for the football match tomorrow?
Carmac: Okay, here is a story. One of the upcoming 1on1s will be with Ralf Reichert aka Griff, one of the founders of ESL and also of SK and the Managing Director of ESL right now. During the interview I was talking to him about the Poland - Germany game and he said he had a very good feeling about it. He said that Germany will have no problem and I said that I had also a good feeling that Germany would have a big problem. He asked me if I wanted to bet and I said, yeah I want to bet. I said "Okay, if I win the bet you give me a nice pair of Adidas Sambas shoes." So he asked "What are you going to give me?" and I offered him some Polnish Wodka, two bottles. "Oh no", he said " a pair of Sambas is like 55 Euro and a bottle of Polish Wodka is about 8 Euro, it's not fair." Without thinking, I said "Okay, I'll give you what the Sambas are worth in Polish alcohol - the worth of the Sambas!" and he instantly said "yes, yes let's do this!". His own company is sponsored by Adidas so he can get those shoes for free but I'm going to pay for the Wodka for him, so basically he cheated me the bastard, Griff... Ralf Reichert, remember that he's a cheater, he cheated me in the bet. Concerning the game I think Germany is the favorite most definitely, you can't question that. It would be stupid to say that Poland is the favorite
or that they should win. But we have a pretty decent team with a very good coach from Holland. So I believe it's going to be a very good game and I'm hoping for a draw: 1-1. Thats what my heart says and I usually don't ever lose bets.
mTw.AMD: Let's have another sidebet. I guess the game ends 3-0 for Germany and if I'm right, you owe me a real 1on1, all right?
Carmac: Oh, we're going to duel - 1on1? Not a problem, man! My prediction is 1-1, your prediction is 3-0 and if you win you get to play me in a game. Okay, sure - Unreal Tournament!
mTw.AMD: Unreal Tournament III?
Carmac: Three? Okay, let's make it Unreal Tournament III. So, that's the bet.
mTw.AMD: Well, thank you for the interview and enjoy the match tomorrow.
Carmac: I also have to say that I'm able to go to the game thanks to Electronic Arts who sponsored the ticket and thanks to Alex Müller from SK Gaming. Thank you.
