"The Semi Final between us and NaVi was the final"
Interview with Danny 'zonic' Sørensen
mymTw.com: Hallo Danny, you just returned from France... How would you describe your weekend in Paris?
Danny 'zonic' Sørensen: It has been a lovely weekend. The event was held in Disney Land, Paris.. So you can imagine how it would be.
mymTw.com: How impressed have you been by the location and organisation of this years ESWC 2010.
zonic: We were five minutes away from the actual Disney Land park, so we had to go there one of the days, and so we did. Free busses to drive us back and forth from our hotel to the event and then to Disney Land, made it impossible to get bored in Paris.
The team was extremely impressed about how they managed to pull of this event.

mymTw.com: What do you think about this years participants at ESWC 2010?
zonic: It is the best of the best that attend the ESWC event as always, so there was no room for errors on events such this.
mymTw.com: Now lets talk about the tournament in specific. The first group stage was easy going for your team, wasn't it?
zonic: Yeah, we had Alternate Attax in our group. A team that obviously has great players, but I feel our gaming style fits them very well, and we saw our selves come out on top in this group. Alternate was however better than expected, so it was a very tight game, and in small moments we got shaky. 16-14 was everything we needed, and we finished first.
mymTw.com: During the group stage it has been announced that a 12 years old player ( I am talking about PinG ) was participating at the Event. How is your opinion about this?
zonic: Yeah I thought it was someones little brother to begin with (laughs) I have no problem with it as long as there is an adult looking after him. I think it is a positive thing for eSport that we have youngsters coming to play, and it makes people get a whole other look on eSport, when a 12 year old has been to a major event already.
mymTw.com: Did you realize that the other teams were really angry because of this?
zonic: I had no clue.. I can't see why actually. As long as an adult is watching him after they are done playing, I can't see the problem. I know there is a rule in Germany that says you have to be 16 or 18 to watch Counter Strike, otherwise it has to be without any blood what so ever. I think it is a stupid rule, and if you go out and kill people just because of Counter Strike, I believe you have bigger problems than this, and they must come from some bad parenting or something.
mymTw.com: Ok so let's come back to the tournament - It seemed like nothing could stop you in the second group stage. Did you have the same feeling as soon as the first matches were easy going for you?
zonic: We actually hated our group, and we gave everything we had to finish at least second. We tried to figure out what map would be preferable against some of the teams. We have met the Frag Executors millions of times, and we have been removing nuke against them since 2008. However before the event we saw a lot of demos with them, and when we saw we were in the same group as them, we actually didn't mind. They got so suprised when they could choose between nuke and tuscan, and they didn't have any chance to get to study us.
mymTw.com: Did you plan on playing vs. Mouz and did you prepare specifically for them?
zonic: It is the best of the best that attend the ESWC event as always, so there was no room for errors on events such this.

mymTw.com: Did you plan on playing vs. Mouz and did you prepare specifically for them?
zonic: We thought we were going to play nuke against Mouz, but it was Tuscan, so I think we were just on the run when we met them, and I also believe we play a decent Tuscan.
mymTw.com: When you entered the playoff stage, your first opponent was Fire Gamers. A lucky start?
zonic: Not really. The Brazilians have always been known for their great aimers, and this time was no exception. I actually feared them a lot because it was the first game of the day, so if we didn't play well individually, they could upset us bigtime. However that was not the case, and I thought we had them under control in the whole match.
mymTw.com: A German commentry named Knochen, described the semi-final match between you and Natus Vincere as the epic match of the year. Did it also feel like it for you?
zonic: Yeah. I feel that we had a great day in the second groupstage where they managed to lose two matches. But the next day we probably wasn't as dominating, where they were crushing fnatic 16-1 on dust2. I believe that the semi final between us and NaVi was the final. I knew that there was no way SK were going to beat NaVi in the final. I am not trying to sound bitter, but I definitely think we deserved the Grand Final spot, being the only team in the tournament with only two lost maps. With that being said, Navi is the winner of this tournament.. It is impressive to play fnatic in the quarter final and then mTw in the Semi final, and still manage to win the event.
mymTw.com: The match started on de_dust2. I have to tell you, during the match I actually lost my breath as Natus Vincere was so dominating. Where do you see the mistakes your team made on this map?
zonic: NaVi plays an awesome dust2 when all the players are on fire. I think our individual performenses was the key factor for this map. However when you lose 6 out of 6 gunrounds in a match, you kind of feel unlucky sometimes.
mymTw.com: After de_dust2 was finished it was your map choice and you picked de_tuscan. Did you know that your opponents might have a slight problem with this map?
zonic: No. We know they are good on all maps, but we hoped we could win Tuscan, because as I stated above, I feel we play a good Tuscan.
zonic: We read them very well in the Overtime, we stacked 4 guys in A when they were going A. And as T we decided to go via the underground for the first time in the match, and that must has surprised them.. So good tactical overview and impressive clutch rounds by minet made us win Tuscan in my opinion.
mymTw.com: It took you 3 overtimes to finaly win this map... What did you feel after this important success?
zonic: I felt we had a great chance of winning the match again. We gave everything we had on that map, and now it was train waiting around the corner.
mymTw.com: The third map played was de_train. Do you think it was a bad choice for you?
zonic: I don't know if it was a bad map for us.. the T side was probably a bad side for us to start obviously ;)
mymTw.com: What have been the major mistakes on de_train?
zonic: I think we choked and everyone was extremely exhaused because we had to start right after Tuscan. I think they played a flawless train what so ever, and there was no chance for us to get through their defense.
mymTw.com: In the match for third place you guys were back on track an did also win it. First of all my congratulations. Looking at your agenda, what happens next after this event?
zonic: We will take a break for one day and then start again tomorrow, where we will be preparing for Arbalet Cup Summer in Dallas. Navi will be there and we will start preparing for them tomorrow..
mymTw.com: Now I would like you to give us an overall rating of ESWC 2010.
zonic: I give it 8 out of 10.
- - A great location
- - Good atmosphere
- - Perfect admins, referees
I won't give it 10 because of the 50 fps in 1 smoke and some bad informations regarding when to be where etc..
mymTw.com: Thank you for the interview and the last words are yours.
zonic: I wanna thank everybody supporting us! - Thanks to our sponsors for making this summer perfect full of events... Mindfactory, Sennheiser, OCZ, Kaspersky... We love you! - And congratz to all the Germans for the Semi final spot in the World Cup.. amazing play, and I am stunned by their teamplay! I hope you go all the way since Denmark is out :)
Take care all
Auf Wiedersehen
